Portraiture as a Mirror is a fun, course workshop designed to push you as an artist, both in terms of technical skill and creative expression. I'll be using self-portraiture as a basis, but you can also complete the course by painting another person.
We’ll also explore how artists throughout history have used portraiture to express a range of emotions, from vulnerability and identity to politics and play. With different modules, covering a bit of art history, hands-on exercises, and time to create, with prompts designed to help you develop the meaning behind your pieces.

My name is Agnes Hjalmarsson, and I'm a Swedish oil painter and content creator. My work explores themes of identity, culture, and belonging, often drawing from my own mixed heritage and personal experiences.
After a short time in fine art school, I realized the academic path wasn’t for me. So for the past few years, I’ve been carving out my own way as a self-taught, full-time artist, documenting the process on Instagram and YouTube, and building a community of artists who care deeply about using art to say something real.
COURSE CONTENT
Portraiture as a Mirror is an invitation to move beyond likeness and explore what it truly means to portray someone through art. This course blends practical technique with conceptual development, guiding you through the emotional, historical, and psychological layers that make portraiture such a powerful form of self-expression, making it perfect for artists of all skill levels — especially those who feel stuck on their journey.
Although my main medium is oils and there will be plenty of tips and tutorials covering that, in one of the modules I encourage you to open up your relationship with materials. You’ll experiment with whatever mediums you already own, but I will provide introductory lessons in graphite, soft pastels, watermixable oils, watercolor, acrylic wash, and of course oil paint.
From there, we’ll move into developing concepts and symbolism, learning how to turn your personal experiences into visual metaphors. You’ll study how artists have approached portraiture, from the quiet storytelling of classical allegory to the deeply personal language of contemporary portraiture. You’ll build your own symbolic vocabulary through prompts centered around storytelling, symbolism, identity, paraphrasing, and documentary, through fun, structured, and easy challenges. There will also be plenty of light-hearted lectures discussing artists who have shaped the genre and are pushing the boundaries of what a portrait is.
Throughout the process, you’ll be challenged to push your art style. Each exercise is designed to stretch your way of seeing, from experimenting with abstraction and distortion to capturing emotion through material rather than form. You’ll learn to loosen control, take risks, and embrace imperfection, because the most authentic portraits are often the ones that break their own rules.
