Since I started sharing my work on social media, I’ve gotten a lot of requests for tutorials and tips. As someone who practically rejected my own art education at a community college I was hesitant to start teaching, but then I realized that I can’t be the only one that doesn’t thrive in an academic setting. I want art to stem from passion, joy, and expression - not deadlines, degrees, and performance anxiety. My name is Agnes Hjalmarsson, and I'm a Swedish oil painter and content creator. My work explores themes of identity, culture, and belonging, often drawing from my own mixed heritage and personal experiences.
After a short time in fine art school, I realized the academic path wasn’t for me. So for the past few years, I’ve been carving out my own way as a self-taught, full-time artist, documenting the process on Instagram and YouTube, and building a community of artists who care deeply about using art to say something real.
Whether you're a beginner or experienced artist, I’m excited to teach you how I bring my portraits to life and, hopefully, inspire you to capture the people in your own life.

Once you’ve built those foundations, Portraiture as a Mirror takes you deeper. Here, the focus shifts from technique to concept. You’ll explore portraiture as a form of storytelling by learning from art history, studying how different artists have portrayed themselves across time, and experimenting with symbolism and creative interpretation through engaging challenges. This course encourages you to think beyond resemblance and to see your art as a reflection of identity, experiences, and imagination.
Taken together, these two courses create a complete path for anyone who wants to grow both technically and creatively — first by learning to paint others with skill and sensitivity, and then by turning that same gaze inward.
It’s a journey from understanding how to paint, to discovering why you paint.
